Catalysts to further deployment of VoIP
VoIP has come a long way in the last decade. The improvement in the bandwidth and the quality of networks certainly helped the growth of VoIP. Broadband had been the biggest catalyst for the deployment of VoIP.
Integrated communications applications are expected to drive VoIP in future. The consumers are likely to look for technology rather than small cost savings. Emerging telephony applications are likely win over customers and tempt them to use VoIP.
New generation of VoIP tools are likely to be the biggest catalyst in drawing more consumers to VoIP. But, what are these new tools? We are not certain. We need to wait and watch.
We already have seen services/products (like Skype) which allow customers to leverage VoIP to transfer voice mail to email and capability to launch three-way calls. Developers will be able to integrate various Instant messages/chat applications with text, voice and video communications. And this is already happening.
Future products may include the features like ability to take two simultaneous calls, get alerts on some other device like mobile or block the users based on profile.
Customers may no longer look at VoIP as a cheap replacement for their standard telephone line. The expectations will on the features. The VoIP developers may need to come out with intelligent call management. The future VoIP enabled devices need to address efficiency and customer support apart from the cost savings.

One VoIP application to integrate with Microsoft office tools, such as Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer may find its way into the market soon. Other future applications may specialize in Voice recognition and Contact Center functions.
Third party developers will be major catalysts. Skype provided a major break through and people started looking into VoIP as a feature rich service provider. New products will be able to send call information into your email system as well as automatically block the out going calls, if the called number is in the d0-not-call directory.
VoIP may soon facilitate multimedia telephony with video messages. Enterprise VoIP applications with conference calls which can transcribe automatically into a log may be one reality in future. Enterprise users will be able to search using voice.
