Target Markets in VoIP

While different types of telephones leverage VoIP, the innovative companies aim to bring out products based on VoIP that will benefit different segments of the industry. The concept of all will revolve around Voice over Internet, you may never know if the communication is through Internet or through copper or wireless.

We can broadly define the target markets of VoIP into four categories:

1. Consumers
2. Educational
3. Small and medium Enterprises (SME)
4. Enterprise

Consumer Market

Practically every house has Internet connectivity – either through dialup or Broadband. In many cases the same copper line of the standard telephone is used to provide broadband. Dial-up internet connectivity has already become part of History. Probably we use it as an emergency back up. Broadband allows the users to use telephone as well as Internet simultaneously. In future VoIP replaces the standard telephone and allows more than one person to talk on different ‘channels’ of the same VoIP line. This eliminates the need for multiple telephone lines for the same house. The features will be same across the products offered by different suppliers under VoIP. However the main difference will be the quality of voice and the prices.

Educational Sector

Many Educational institutions currently use Satellite broadcast, where one way Video and two way audio is enable in case of distance education. As the Educational networks get smarter, the campuses and distance learning system will leverage VoIP. Instructor led training with Interactive voice responses may deliver better results. VoIP will certainly be an optimum solution for all educational institutions aiming for imparting distance learning.

Small to Medium Enterprises (SME)

Big enterprises may have the necessary infrastructure and the budgets. When it comes to Small and Medium enterprises, optimizing the telecommunication costs is very important. For any one, Money saved is money earned. VoIP offers a great range of phones and phone systems at lower monthly rates. In future, more products are expected in this segment that can increase productivity by leveraging VoIP. Customer support, Inventory management, Vendor relation ships would be benefited with the third party tools leveraging VoIP.

Enterprise Markets

Most of the large Enterprises may have been using VoIP in one way or other. Many have customer care service on VoIP equipment. In future we mat see them going for IP based PBX system with hundreds of extensions. The equipment which will be available for Small businesses can also be used in the Enterprise markets. This depends on the size of the department and the ability of VoIP equipment to integrate at the enterprise level. Hence all the VoIP equipment is expected to be of certain standards and scalable. A variety of third-party desktop applications that run on VoIP will be available to enhance productivity. However, it will be the responsibility of IT managers to educate the potential users and develop the requirements for these applications.
